A traditional shore ballad, possibly based on a song written by the music-hall impresario J. B. Geoghegan (c.1816–1889). It tells the story of a man who wants to sail away to be reunited with his true-love, who has been sent away in chains to Australia.
Sing ho! for a brave and a gallant ship And a fair and favouring breeze,
With a bully crew and a captain too To carry me over the seas,
To carry me over the seas my boys To my true-love far away,
For I'm taking a trip in a government ship Ten thousand miles away.
